Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics was founded in 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was started by a group of women who wanted to help the government preserve food and improve public nutrition and health during WWI.

Now it is the largest organization in the world for food and nutrition professionals. In fact, it has grown to consist of more than 100,000 qualified practitioners, including registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, nutritionists and other professionals in the dietetic field.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics works to advance dietetics through advocacy, research and education and to improve the health of the nation’s citizens. Members of the organization help to positively shape the public’s food choices and offer nutrition therapy services and prevention in a multitude of settings.

Additionally, the Academy’s members are leading advocates for issues related to nutrition. American Nutrition Association

In 1972, the American Nutrition Association was formed with the mission to promote healthy living to the public through wellness and nutrition education. The members use science-based research to educate professionals and laypeople about how proper nutrition can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

The organization’s outreach programs include a quarterly news journal, visits to local schools, publications such as cookbooks and food charts, nutrition, cooking and preventative healthcare courses, an audio/visual lecture library and presentations for other local organizations.

The American Society for Nutrition

The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) is a non-profit organization that works to bring together researchers, nutritionists and other industry professionals from around the world to advance the overall knowledge and application of nutrition.

ASN was founded in 1928 and was originally called the American Institute for Nutrition. Later, in 2005, it merged with several other nutrition organizations to form the ASN. It currently focuses on both animal and human nutrition and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for both.
