How to Become a Dietitian in New York
- Age: New York dietitians must be of legal age, 18 or older.
- Education: Either a bachelor’s degree or an acceptable associate’s degree is required before licensure.
- Licensure: You must be licensed with the State of New York to be legally allowed to use the designation of ‘Certified Dietitian’.
- Degree: Bachelor’s degrees must be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) and should include major focus on professional dietetics and nutrition. Associate’s degrees must also be accredited by CADE and should follow the same coursework requirement.
- Experience: Applicants with a bachelor’s degree should have at least 800 hours of supervised work experience. Applicants with an Associate’s degree need a minimum of 1,600 hours supervised work experience.
- Exam: All applicants must have earned a passing grade in the certification exam given by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- Citizenship: Dietitians in New York must be legal immigrants or US citizens.
- Background Check: All dietitians must undergo a criminal and professional background check and must abide by professional standards.
- Endorsement: Associate’s degree applicants must provide endorsement from three dietitians who are licensed by the state of New York or are registered with an acceptable national organization.
- Licensure: Your application will be submitted with the New York Office of Professions. It should include a $294 certification fee and all documents necessary to verify you have met the educational, experience and exam requirements. When approval is granted, you can work as a dietitian and use the title of a certified dietitian.
