How to Become a Dietitian in Idaho
Idaho requires that its dietitians be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). By following the CDR requirements for registration, you will also be completing the qualifications necessary to apply for a dietitian’s license in Idaho. The CDR registration requirements include:
- Age: Aspiring dietitians must be 18 or older.
- Education: A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. Your major course of study must be in food management, dietetics or food and nutrition. Eligible programs must follow the guidelines of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Experience: 1200 hours of clinical dietitian experience. An internship supervised by a registered dietitian is the usual method for fulfilling the experience requirement. Some degree programs allow you to gain work experience as well.
- Exam: Earn a passing grade in the CDR certification exam. After failing twice, you will not be eligible for a license unless you can prove you’ve engaged in further training.
- Citizenship: Only US citizens and legal aliens can be dietitians in Idaho.
- Background Check: When applying for your Idaho license, you must disclose criminal convictions other minor traffic offenses, disciplinary action you have been subject to and any times a dietitian license application has been denied.
- References: You must provide two character references.
- Photo: Two clear images of your face are required for licensure.
- Licensure: Upon receiving a passing grade in the CDR exam and receiving your registration, you can submit your application to the Idaho Board of Medicine. Include a copy of your CDR registration, proof of your degree and all other required documents. You should also pay a $100 license fee. After approval, you will be able to use the ‘Licensed Dietitian’ designation in Idaho.
- Provisional License: If you have completed your degree but have not taken the CDR exam, you can be granted a provisional license. This license lasts for a year and allows you to work as a dietitian under the supervision of a licensed dietitian.
